Electrolysis: Permanent Hair Removal for Facial Hair, PCOS, Hirsutism, and Excess Body Hair

Are you growing hair in unusual places where you do not want it, such as on the neck, chest, chin, and back? Conditions like PCOS/PCOD and hirsutism often cause such issues.

Understanding Hirsutism: Hirsutism refers to excessive body and facial hair in women, caused by increased production of androgens (male hormones) or heightened sensitivity of androgen receptors in skin follicles.

PCOS and Facial Hair: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is common, affecting 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. Among its many symptoms, hirsutism is particularly prevalent, affecting 70% of women with PCOS. This condition leads to excessive hair growth on the face, sternum, breasts, and stomach (above the pubis) due to abnormally high androgen levels.

Presentation of Hirsutism: Hirsutism manifests as coarse, dark hair on the face, chest, abdomen, back, upper arms, and legs. It is treatable with proper diagnosis and a combination of medical and cosmetic procedures.

The Link Between Androgens and Facial Hair: To understand the impact of androgens, it’s essential to distinguish between vellus hair and terminal hair:

  • Vellus Hair: Lightly pigmented, fine, and short, found on the face and back (commonly known as peach fuzz).
  • Terminal Hair: Coarse, thick, and long, usually found in the genital area, on the scalp, and underarms.

In women with PCOS, hair follicles become sensitive to hormones. When androgens act on these follicles, vellus hair converts into terminal hair, resulting in thicker, darker, and larger hair similar to male hair growth patterns. Androgen-sensitive areas include the upper lip, chin, breasts, lower abdomen, inner thighs, and lower back.

Electrolysis offers a permanent solution for unwanted hair growth caused by conditions like PCOS and hirsutism, providing lasting relief and improved self-esteem.
