Numbing Creams
Understanding Electrolysis Pain Levels
Is Electrolysis Painful?
Years ago, electrolysis was indeed painful. However, today’s advanced machines make the process much more tolerable. If you’ve had tattoos or laser treatments, you might find electrolysis less painful in comparison. Pain tolerance varies from person to person, and the insertion of the probe should generally be painless. However, you may feel a small tingle with each hair treated. The intensity of the current will depend on the coarseness or resilience of the hair.
Using Numbing Agents
To increase comfort during the treatment, numbing agents can be used. If you find the discomfort too much to handle, your doctor may prescribe an anesthetic cream. Despite the mild discomfort, the dramatic and long-lasting results make the process worthwhile.
Personal Experiences
Upper Lip Treatment
Personally, I’ve had electrolysis on my upper lip, which is a very delicate area, and I didn’t require any numbing cream. It was a bit uncomfortable but manageable.
Other Areas
For other areas, I did find it necessary to use numbing cream. Initially, I used over-the-counter (OTC) numbing creams like Zenza and Elma. However, I realized that prescription creams offered better numbing power and were more cost-effective in the long run. Additionally, some extended medical benefits covered part of my prescription cost.
Prescription Numbing Creams
The Benefits of Prescription Creams
If you opt for a prescription numbing cream, it can only be filled at a compounding pharmacy, and it usually takes a few days to a week to be prepared. When I first started using BLT (Benzocaine/Lidocaine/Tetracaine) Cream, I only got small tubes. I quickly realized it was more cost-efficient to get a larger container, especially for areas requiring more treatment time.
Recommended Formulation
The prescription my doctor gave me was for Benzocaine 20%, Lidocaine 10%, and Tetracaine 4%. There are other formulations available, and it is important to consult with your compounding pharmacist and doctor to determine the best option for you.
